General Electric’s Decatur plant was the only manufacturer in Alabama to receive a clean energy manufacturing tax credit under the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act.

The White House announced Friday the GE plant was one of 183 in the nation to receive the 30 percent tax credit.

GE applied for $6.5 million at the Decatur plant. The White House had not released information on the amount awarded, but said the purpose of the credit is to assist in the manufacture of efficient refrigerators that reduce greenhouse gas emissions and energy consumption.

James Campbell, chief executive of GE Appliances & Lighting, said the tax credits “will help accelerate development” of the division’s energy-efficient projects.

The purpose of the tax-credit program is to supply clean energy projects with U.S. made parts and equipment.

The facilities receiving awards also had to show they supported growth in U.S. exports of U.S.-manufactured clean energy products.
